Did you know that entering the 1930s, Colorado had only 500 miles of paved roads? During that decade the breathtaking 23-mile Rim Rock Drive was under construction along sheer cliffs. The scenic byway winds through sandstone canyons that were largely created by flash flooding. To prevent a washout of the road after heavy rainfalls, drainage must be sufficient to cope with sudden, prodigious volumes of water and debris. This video was recorded by Greg Owens in Fruita Canyon. It illustrates how heavy rain is directed under the road and on down the canyon. The design, engineering and workmanship of Rim Rock Drive provided a sturdy roadway with drainage that has been able to cope with flash flooding. A CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) project, Rim Rock Drive was built by tough, courageous young men and LEM’s (Local Experienced Men) from local communities. It was hand built using mostly sledge hammers, picks, shovels and wheel barrows. Work commenced in 1933, continued until 1942, and then was suspended during WWII. Work resumed in 1946 and was completed in 1950. Rim Rock Drive is a marvel of skill and determination, far outlasting the Great Depression and leaving a remarkable legacy that endures today.
