Did you know that one big reason horses have ground trouble is because they’re not using their bodies in a balanced way? If a horse starts preparing for the turn too soon for example, they’ll also tend to lean excessively to the inside. This throws their body weight toward the barrel. With less than ideal footing, their feet may slip out from under them (to the outside) because their weight is not balanced. When a horse is truly in “four wheel drive,” he’ll be more powerful and better prepared to handle poor ground conditions. Although each horse has a unique style, we have a lot of control over the way in which our horses learn (or even re-learn) to use themselves on the pattern.
