Did you know that one can of coke contains enough sugar to meet our recommended daily sugar intake? According to the Health Promotion Board, our daily sugar intake should not exceed 10 per cent of our daily total calorie intake. For example, if your daily calorie intake is 1,600 calories, you should take no more than 40g of sugar (which contains 160 calories) every day. That is equivalent to eight teaspoons of sugar, or just one can of coke! Jeremy Paxman, the host of television programme Newsnight revealed that a large cup of Coke contains a staggering 44 sachets of sugar! (whereas a regular cup of Coke contains 23 sachets of sugar.) Even Coca-Colas European president admitted that some customers dont realise how much sugar is in the soft drink giants drinks. Hed also admitted that things need to change and cup serving sizes need to be reduced. According to a study, all it takes is one can of (sugar-sweetened) soda a day to boost the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22%! Diabetes is actually a common condition that affects 8.6% of the population in Singapore.
