Did you know that the 298th Army Band actually lived in four-plex - TopicsExpress

Did you know that the 298th Army Band actually lived in four-plex apartments near U-bahn Onkel Toms Hütte in Zehlendorf? From mid-July 1945 until the band moved to McNair in June 1949, band soldiers lived in an area of Zehlendorf that was not a part of an Army kaserne at all. Originally confiscated from the occupants shortly after the war, the band and the WACs formed a small compound. The U-Bahn stop featured an American movie theater and a small PX, and on occasion the command would sponsor live theater instead of movies. The soldiers of the 298th would either hitchhike or take the U-bahn up to Clay HQ (then called OMGUS) for chow. A photograph from Ward Lindstrom shows several guys entering the side gate to the compound on Saargemündestr. The OKH compound was but a temporary situation and in June 1949, the band moved to McNair for about a year, after which it moved again to Roosevelt Barracks for about another year. In 1951, the band made its final move to Bldg. 909 on Andrews Barracks and stayed in that facility until deactivation in September 1994.
