Did you know that the first person to propose an accessibility - TopicsExpress

Did you know that the first person to propose an accessibility icon that represents a more active, independent disabled person was Brendan Murphy from Ireland? Murphy was inspired in part by Christy Brown, a childhood neighbour of his father’s in Dublin whose story of life with cerebral palsy was made into the Oscar-winning film “My Left Foot.’’ His updated pictogram, seen by many as more progressive in its view of people who use wheelchairs, has been adopted by the city of San Antonio and Williams College, and such retailers as REI and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. A slight variation of it is used by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Read the link below to see how the design has evolved since Murphys icon. Do you agree with co-founder Sara Hendron that the current design proposed by The Accessibility Project serves as a better representation of individuals with disabilities, namely in how the new design conveys a sense of action and movement (quote published in PrintMag, 6th June 2013)?
