Did you know that the same chip you put in your pet to track its whereabouts is also contributing to the restoration of salmon? Its called a Passive Integrated Transponder, or PIT tag, and its about the size of a grain of rice, but the data scientists derive from the device are revealing important information about salmon survival--where and when they migrate and how many fish survive each stage of their life cycle. Tracking salmon survival allows managers to assess the effectiveness of different management strategies.
