Did you know that these cabins at the Silliman University Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village in Camp-Lookout are made of container vans? There are 6 of them, each equipped with two bedrooms, shared toilet and bath, a living area and a kitchen. And they are available for rent to members of the Silliman community. The Village is a great place for reflection and relaxation. Located at the hip of a mountain, it is blessed with lush vegetation around it. Its cool weather also makes it an ideal vacation place. The veranda on the second floor of the main house (living area) offers a view of Dumaguete and the Bohol Sea. It is units such as these that Silliman is inspired to develop. They are more calamity-resilient and have been tested to withstand strong winds and earthquakes. Plans are underway to develop calamity-resilient structures on the campus that are made of container vans. Also, the University is exploring partnership opportunities with organizations in building classrooms and churches, which are made of container vans, in areas that were badly affected by typhoon Yolanda.
