Diet: Lower Stroke Risk by Eating a High-Protein Diet? Every year about 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke, which results in approximately 137,000 deaths. According to new research, a diet high in protein may reduce stroke risk by 20%. Researchers found that individuals who had the highest protein intake - particularly from fish - were 20% less likely to experience a stroke compared to those with the lowest protein intake. They also found that for every additional 20 grams of protein consumed each day, stroke risk decreased by 26%. Neurology, June 2014
