Dilapidated roads main source of traffic mess in Srinagar Chaotic traffic jams witnessed on Monday =>The diversion in traffic because of the construction work on Rambagh-Jehangir Chowk Flyover is leading to traffic chaos in Civil Lines. On Monday, hundreds of vehicles got stranded along Mehjoor Nagar Bund, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh and Abdullah Bridge. Surprisingly only two traffic police cops were present on these routes to man the traffic. Commuters told CNS that they spent hours together in traffic jam while traffic cops were seen nowhere to regulate the traffic. “We can’t blame traffic cops only, but the rash and insensible driving by few drivers who don’t follow lane driving is the main source of traffic mess along these routes,” a government employee said. “Once you take diversion near Rambagh you travel along Mehjoor Nagar Bund vial Jawahar Nagar, Rajbah and Abdullah Bridge to reach city centre Lal Chowk, you will notice only two traffic cops manning the traffic, one near Hattric crossing and another near Abdullah Bridge. Besides, few voluntary workers can be seen regulating the traffic near Mehjoor Nagar Bund,” a medico told CNS adding that traffic department deploy their men at some places where there is no need for them. “Ignoring some of the vital junctions, the government has been concentrating on traffic regulation on some “selected roads”, mostly frequented by the high profile people. But the motorways particularly the ones frequented by Aam Aadmi have been allegedly ignored by the government,” people alleged. Commuters alleged that all along the Mehjoor Nagar Bund, due to bad road conditions, traffic chaos has become the order of the day. They said government has made hollow claims about the widening of the borders along the road. “There is so much mud and patholes on these roads that a driver finds himself hapless in driving at a snail’s pace that results in frequent traffic jams,” a Jawahar Nagar resident said adding that the work on the construction of temporary road in Mehjoor Nagar Nallah that government has undertaken is going at snail’s pace. The commuters alleged that traffic cops are taking no action against those who indulge in wrong parking. “Some private school owners park their buses alongside the road which also hampers the traffic movement. Strict action should be taken against these offenders,” a University student said. SP Traffic Haseeb-Ur-Rehman told CNS that traffic cops are everywhere alert and present but the dilapidated and bad road conditions have been giving rise to the traffic mess. “Due to patholes, water logging and bad road conditions vehicles get stranded and this results in frequent traffic jams,” he said.
