Dimity was a warm weather textile found through out the south. Made in the mid 18th century of linen and cotton and later of all cotton, it encompassed a number of harness loomed patterned fabrics. Our striped dimity burnleyandtrowbridge/5908.aspx is very similar in weave and weight to the dimities found in these two pieces from the Colonial Williamsburg collection. We have found this particular weave of dimity in extant clothing, textile sample books as well as the Foundling Tokens. Easy to clean, light in color and breathable in fiber it was a mainstay in summer cloth as well as more intimate clothing such as pockets, underpetticoats and childrens garments.
