Dishwasher broke the other day. Fixed it ourselves, but had to - TopicsExpress

Dishwasher broke the other day. Fixed it ourselves, but had to wait a week for the part to arrive. Which brings me to a musing Ive often had on household labor saving devices. The king is the washing machine as resorting to washing clothes by hand would take a HUGE amount of time, time the washing machine saves. Next Id probably put the vacuum cleaner as it beats brooms (and dust pan emptying) or the older alternative of beating rugs. Maybe next Ill put the dryer... I am not really sure this saves time as I still remember the days when my mom hung clothes outside on the line and that took about as much time too, but the nice thing about the dryer is it largely bows to your schedule. (I think line drying took longer requiring you to plan to do the wash first thing in the AM so you had the rest of the day to dry... no such planning required for the dryer). Thing is I think microwave is still ahead of the dish washer. Mainly because ... well, how many of us pre-hand-wash our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher anyway? So how much more time would it take to real wash them? Dishwasher may be more sanitary and, like the dryer, bows to your schedule (hard to clean dishes can be soaked but you gotta plan for that). One EXCELLENT thing about the dish washer is its massive drying racks... those work even when the rest of the dishwasher itself is busted! Hmmm, maybe ahead of the washing machine I should put the water heater. Or maybe indoor plumbing in general.
