Dissent ift.tt/1zySdxv Over the past few years’ street protests worldwide have become increasingly more common. Unfortunately in many cases these have been marred by violence on both sides. Governments seem at a loss on how to appropriately deal with these situations and often resort to heavy-handed measures. This approach leads to retaliation and an escalation of violence. It must be accepted that these protests do not exist for their own sake. They are an expression of the frustration and helplessness felt, when confronted by unjust systems. When our leaders ignore and fail to listen to the people (who are fed up with rhetoric and often in desperate situations), a reaction is justified. Street protests are a last resort when other means of change have failed. Dissent is a single channel video installation composed of collected footage from public demonstrations. It is an unnerving snippet of social unrest that can potentially occur anywhere. The protest footage is transformed into a kaleidoscopic form, reminiscent of a flower, and is simultaneously displayed on the right panel. This is an essentially an optimistic act. It is hoped that the actions taken and courage shown by the protestors can ultimately result in something positive.
