Distressing Things I Learned Today: 1) Almost twice as many people die by suicide in SC annually than by homicide. 2) Suicide accounts for over three times as many deaths annually in SC than HIV/AIDS. 3) Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students. 4) In the US, someone dies by suicide approximately every 13.7 minutes. 5) The highest rates of suicide every year happen during May & June. 6) People who jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to end their lives are most often facing the land. Theyre not jumping into nothingness. Theyre still tied to us. Folks, this constitutes an epidemic. If youre reading this, please know that its not some imaginary person who cares. Its me. I care. There is hope, & there is help. Your death would color the lives of more than you know. You would leave behind a space that no one else on earth could ever fill. Wave your arms. Wave them big. I know where they keep the life jackets.
