Divina Tragedia Chenavard Paul (1807-1895) Painted between 1865 and 1869 Oil on canvas (H. 400 x L. 550 cm) Gallery: Musée dOrsay, Paris, France After the Revolution of 1848, the Director of Fine Arts, Charles White, asked artist Paul Chenavard for a work for the Pantheon for the new government since it wanted to establish the Pantheon as a temple of humanity. The artist in particular was to provide a mosaic displaying an impartial summary of all religious traditions. But in December 1851, the Pantheon was turned over to the Catholic church by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, and the project assigned to Chenavard was abandoned. For the Salon of 1869, Chenavard again took up the idea of an illustration of the history of religions with Divina Tragedy, counterpoint the text of Dante Alighieri s Divine Comedy.
