Do You Believe? Thursday March 20, 2014 The Rav used to say, “Don’t tell me you ‘believe’ in God.” Why? Because the concept of “belief” inherently includes its opposite: doubt. For instance, if someone is ill, we believe (that is, we have faith or hope) that he will get better (we don’t “know” if it is going to happen). This is a faith-based kind of intention. It’s like saying, “I believe that if I act in this way, the results will be x, y, and z.” Instead, the Rav always talked about having certainty in the Creator. Certainty is the idea that just as we know that the sun will come up every day in spite of the weather, we know the existence of the Creator. Now you may ask: How? How can we have certainty about something that we cannot touch or directly experience? The answer is that we build our certainty through those things that we can see and understand: the simple miracle of breathing, the beauty and wonder of sunlight, the synchronicities we experience on a daily basis that can’t be written off as coincidence, just to name a few. If we know these things, then how can we not acknowledge the Creator’s hand in every part of Creation—including the minutiae of our lives? Certainty in the Creator translates to the certainty that what happens in my life from this moment to the next moment is exactly the thing that will help me on my life’s path.
