Do You Work For Long Hours? Some of us in this profession work for really long hours. It can be so tasking and also so tiring, especially if you are working in a busy unit or ward. Working in some hospitals can really be more demanding than in others. Most times you usually end your shift very tired and worn out and even when you get home; it may not be so easy to even prepare anything to eat. And you may also be on another long shift the next day. All these can add enormous stress to the nurse and is on24ne of the reasons why many nurses eventually either resign from where they are working or totally quit the profession. It is evident that some nurses work a 12-hour shift, i.e.from 7am-7pm each day. There have been some who work for 24 hours non-stop, though on special request and agreement in some institutions. If you are working in such demanding institution or ward, it will help to make some fast adjustments to help mop up the stress and also increase your efficiency and add to your satisfaction. Below are some points you can adopt: Plan your day A good plan of how you intend to handle each work in your shift will help you a lot. As you alone are more familiar with what happens in your ward everyday, you are also better informed on the easiest way to handle certain issues to save time and limit stress .Do Not Neglect Your Meals. It is a very wise thing to recall always that you cannot work without enough energy. You cannot achieve much in such a demanding environment when you allow yourself to be hungry and “run out of fuel.” Do not neglect you break time. Nurses do have some time to rest during shifts when one person or persons are allowed to go for break and return to work at a stipulated time. This is especially very important and also very good for nurses who work on extended shifts. Be Thorough In You Duties Not completing a specified assignment or duties on time can add more stress and pressure on your schedule.
