Do not miss this interview on Terrace Talk this evening Radio Kerry 6=8 pm. With 94 year old John Hunt who i interviewed in Chicago recently. It amazing stuff. This is a little snippet from my Kerryman Column this week but this evening you can hear John tell the story himself. Then he described in vivid detail the day Purty Landers saved his life. “We had decided to burn down the jail, we waited until conditions were fine and windy and as the fire spread gun shots were fired by the guards and we ran to take cover. My great friend Barney Casey was shot dead beside me when I realized we were fleeing in the wrong direction and it was then that Purty raced after me and dragged me to safety. I firmly believe to this very day that only for him I would have died in that camp”. In what was a captivating lengthy interview John was at pains to stress that during those troubled times, “only for men like John Joe Sheehy, Joe Barrett, Con Brosnan and Johnny Walsh the GAA might not have survived in Kerry”. He heard Johnny Walsh state on numerous occasions, “as long as we have a Kerry jersey on our back there will be no mention of politics”. And of course Joe Barrett and Con Brosnan played on opposite sides in the famous Ex-Internees versus Kerry match in 1924 which set the foundation stone for Kerrys wins of the 20s and even further ahead. I wonder is this extraordinary Limerick man John Hunt the only survivor to day of those troubled days of interment?
