Do you have an area of your property that likes to stay wet? Why not consider some ditch stonecrop (Penthorum sedoides - bit.ly/1FOQS68) to add an interesting touch to these spots? Ditch stonecrop is seemingly average at first glance but a closer inspection will reveal a rather unique nature to this species. It produces interesting little flowers that arent super showy until it sets seed. The seeds turn a deep red and are quite eye catching around this time of year. There isnt much data out there on this plant and it is possible that populations are in decline due to wetland destruction. There has been some serious taxonomic confusion over this species as well. Some authors have placed it in Crassulaceae, whereas others place it in Saxifragaceae. I think the generally accepted classification for this plant is that it belongs in its own family, Penthoraceae. Either way, it is a neat plant that deserves some recognition. As stated, ditch stonecrop prefers wet soils and does quite well along the banks of creeks, ponds, and water gardens alike. The seeds germinate best when in sunlight so make sure the spot you pick is a bit bare. The seeds are quite small with an estimated 1,300,000 seeds per ounce. Considering the hardy nature of this plant, you really are getting a lot of bang for you buck. Get your seeds now so they can be fall sown, ready to germinate come spring.
