LASC is looking for a committed volunteer who can work 6-8 hours a week conducting outreach and screening clients for our quarterly expungement clinics. Read on for more information... Description: The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) has identified a need in the low-income community for legal assistance directed at ex-offenders transitioning back into society who are anxious to address the collateral sanctions resulting from their incarceration and criminal records. LASC has been working with pro bono attorneys who have been trained to assist eligible clients with completing record sealing requests for Franklin County in a clinic setting. To ensure that clients are appropriately placed in this clinic, LASC is seeking a committed “Reentry Volunteer.” The Reentry Volunteer would be responsible for conducting phone interviews of clients who have contacted LASC intake and expressed an interest in record sealing. The Volunteer would screen the client for eligibility, research any relevant issues, and then prepare the client for the pro bono clinics, which are expected to continue on a quarterly basis for the foreseeable future. If time allows, the Volunteer would also assist LASC staff with community outreach. Time Commitment: LASC anticipates that the Reentry Volunteer could complete necessary work in 6-8 hours per week, and individuals would be expected to be physically located at our office at 1108 City Park Avenue. We are asking the volunteer/student to commit to one semester (or 3 months) of work, with the understanding that we can work around exams and holidays. Skills: LASC is seeking a volunteer who is reliable, responsible, and has excellent attention to detail. We are seeking someone who can multi-task and work well on a team. A particular interest in working with individuals transitioning out of the criminal justice system s or the low-income population is preferred.
