Do you like our new cover photo? This is Barry Caldwell. He has worked as a radiographer for the past ten years and is devoted to improving the way in which cancer is treated. Barry started his career at the Beatson in Glasgow before moving to other posts in London and Dundee. He returned to the Beatson in February 2013 and has been a key member of the clinical research team ever since. A pivotal part of Barry’s position is to make sure that the patients at the Beatson have access to cutting-edge radiotherapy clinical trials. Barry said: “Going through treatment for cancer is incredibly hard on the patient, both physically and mentally, and the trials we run are dedicated to making sure the patient receives the optimal level of care and support throughout this difficult time.” Focusing purely on radiotherapy clinical trials is an entirely new role within the department and also in radiotherapy in Scotland and Barry expresses how fortunate they are to be able to do this. The team at the Beatson are able to take part in national trials as well as undertaking their own research to improve patient care. Barry is passionate about the work the Beatson does and a priority for him is the patient contact, helping them through their treatment. Not all patients choose to take part in research but Barry feels strongly that those that do should have all the relevant trials available to them. Barry said: “More and more people are becoming interested in taking part in these trials and the Beatson Cancer Charity will be an integral part in the funding required We look forward to introducing many more staff members, patients and fundraisers to you over the next few months - the people behind the #Beatson.
