Doctors, nurses and associates at MedStar Southern Maryland - TopicsExpress

Doctors, nurses and associates at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center have joined together and generously donated over $90,000 of their own money to create a fund that supports patients in need. We recently created a mission fund for our patients who do not have adequate resources to support their recovery or transition home with dignity. While we eventually expect that the mission fund will encompass several patient centered services, we have officially launched it by establishing an emergency clothing closet. The emergency clothing closet grew out of an existing need at our hospital. Occasionally patients who lacked resources or family support were being discharged without proper clothing. Rather than have our patients leave the hospital in a paper gown, nurses, caseworkers and patient advocates would scramble to find usable clothing from the lost and found; or chip in their own money to buy clothing. Now with an emergency clothing closet available, if we discover a patient in need we can request sweatshirt and pants, underwear, socks and basic footwear in a variety of sizes. And although their needs are very different, we also provide baby clothing and supplies for new moms who lack resources. Shortly after making a purchase of clothing, we were able to assist our first patient. The patient, who has few resources, when offered some clothing, said “are you sure you want to give this to me?” Thanks to the generosity of the men and women who work at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, we were resoundingly able to say “yes”- and send this patient home with dignity.
