Does Islam give Muslim men disciplinary rights over their wives, such as hitting them when they disobey? One of the most controversial issues in the discourse of Islam and gender equality. Ayesha Chaudhry problemetizes the controversial verse 4:34 of Quran, that gives Muslim husbands the permission to hit their wives, in her book Domestic Violence and the Islamic Tradition: Ethics, Law, and the Muslim Discourse on Gender (Oxford University Press, 2013), providing historical genealogy of pre-colonial and post-colonial interpretations of this verse and their implications.
