Dominican players helping at home ... Nelson Cruz, Ervin Santana and Yordano Ventura visited their hometowns in the Dominican Republic last week, providing toys and books to hundreds of school children. More than 200 kids turned out on Dec. 17 to see Ventura distribute the holiday gifts at Lucia De La Cruz Elementary School. I am here to send a message of how important education and sport are, but most also I want to say that you (children) should be respectful to your parents, teachers, older people -- with everyone, said Ventura, a rookie pitcher who competed in the World Series with the Royals in 2014. Ventura, speaking to students, parents and teachers, stressed the importance of education no matter what career path is eventually chosen. Keep always studying. You have to work hard to be somebody, and I am an example of that, he said. Principal Pablo Martinez named Ventura the “godfather” of the school during the ceremony. I am extremely happy to be here with these children, who are ultimately the reason were doing this, Ventura said. For my part I hope to continue working to further assist more schools in this area. Santana provided the toys and books to kids the following day in San Cristobal and Cruz brought toys and book to the children of Monte Cristi on Dec. 18. -- Ismael Granadillo
