Dont allow gendered harassment in your classes. In one of my technical classes in HS I experienced boys who couldnt keep their hands to themselves (they grabbed my breasts) in class. When I complained to the teacher SHE said Boys will be boys. After that the boys grabbed me more often. Prior to that class, I respected that teacher. After that class, I had a much lower opinion of her. My HS counselor when I told him that I would be applying for Engineering programs, he tried hard to convince me to go into an easier job like Nursing or Secretarial work. Even though I had had him as a teacher in Junior High School, before he became my counselor and I had like him, after that incident I lost all respect for him. The same kind of problems happened in college and in work place. I was able to mostly ignore it, but the stereotyping occurred so often that some of it bled through. These days, the most upsetting is when I hear Professional Women Engineers who are also working to increase the numbers of young women in Engineering state stereotypes against women out loud without realizing they had just done so.
