Dont ask if St Maarten should go independent, ask if St Maarten is - TopicsExpress

Dont ask if St Maarten should go independent, ask if St Maarten is self sufficient. Ask if St Maarten has the resources to sustain its people, to protect its people, in times of disaster. Right now politicians and their agents are trying to use emotions, when they should be using logic. I noticed that NOT ONE person was upset with the military presence in St Maarten, they were relieved. Nobody has forgotten hurricane Luis. If Philipsburg and our infrastructure floods within seconds, what about the next hurricane? Currently Philipsburg is SINKING. Our roads are falling apart, the Pensioners cannot afford GEBE, most dont get their tiny pensions on time. We have people making ten thousand dollars per month, ignoring people surviving on less than 500 guilders a month, and now theyre trying to convince us that IF we go independent- THEN they would care. We rely solely on tourism, and because of the rise in crime during the past 4 semi-autonomous years, were losing the tourism industry. The government has done nothing, and instead has encouraged the rise in crime, by preventing many people in law enforcement, from doing their job. I am not for DEPENDENCE on anyone or anything, but if you want to speak about independence, first explain to the people how we are going to survive, and how we are going to sustain ourselves, when weve NEVER done it before in the past. Its simply easier to scream independence! than it is to tell THE PEOPLE where all of that Dutch funding money, that was meant to take care of THE PEOPLE went. Thats all I have to say in the matter. And as usual, Im on nobodys side in this, I would just like a logical answer from people like Olivier Arrindell who are screaming for Independence, but not telling anyone how we are going to sustain ourselves. In all honesty, it seems that people LOVE the Dutch when they are here during natural disasters, and they LOVE the Dutch when they are funding St Maarten and the other islands to a tune of one billion dollars, but then we HATE them when they ask, where their money went. I am not a supporter of the Dutch, but I am a supporter of logic and common sense.
