Dont be fooled. The Common Core, though not the perfect solution to our nations educational woes, states that students must be able to read and understand historical documents. If the assignment suggests that the documents are out dated, that is the poor judgment and bias of the teacher. The Common Core is a general list of what students must master by a certain time (reading informational texts, identifying point of view in literature, etc.) Well trained, responsible teachers wont make a mockery of historical documents and hide behind the excuse of aligning with the Common Core. The decisions of which materials to utilize and the content of assignments are up to the local boards, districts, and teachers. The CC standards merely give a Point B. Reaching Point B from each students current Point A is up to the professional educator.
