Dont you love old cars, I went chasing the missing dash light this arvo in the Valiant which exposed to me the reason that Dave said the headlight switch/wiring needed more than our temporary repair (probably 5 years ago). One of the wires had the insulation melted for about 600mm and another had the insualtion melted off for about 200mm and then melted from there to the boot. This was where one of the previous owners had soldered a join and wrapped it in tape which had worked its way off and was shorting on the floor of the boot. Obviously not enough to short the 2 fuses the Valiant has or to be a serious impediment to the lights after our bodge. Anyhoo this has encouraged me to look closer at the beast which has been the reliable back up car that sits in the shed and comes out every 6 to 8 weeks or so when needed. My short list is new temp gauge, reglue the tacho needle while I have the dash out, sort out the brake booster (it takes a heavy boot without it), manufacture a new lock pin plate arrangement so the drivers door locks properly and get the radio working. That ought to keep me busy for a while and distract me from the evil and discouraging rust and poor finish.
