Don’t waste water even if you were at a running stream - Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) Wudhu is a great Ibaadah (act of worship). The Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said that He who performs the Wudhu perfectly (i.e., according to Sunnah), his sins will depart from his body, even from under his nails. [Muslim]. However, certain acts spoil this great Ibadah and deprive one of the full benefits and virtues of Wudhu. Among these acts is the wasting of water. To use more than what is necessary is termed israaf. Regarding israaf, Allah declares: “… eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).” (7:31) Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked a person, who was performing Wudhu: “Why are you wasting water?” The person enquired: “Is there Israaf (waste) even in Wudhu?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes indeed, (do not waste) even if you are at the bank of a river.” (Ibn Majah) Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) has narrated: “The Prophet used to take a bath with one Sa or up to five Mudds of water and used to perform ablution with one Mudd of water.” (Bukhari) Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reports: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) used one Mudd of water for Wudhu and one Sa for Ghusl.” (Abu Dawood) On the average, most people use more than six litres of water for one Wudhu (ablution) and about 100 litres for a shower. One Mudd is approximately 1.03 litres, and one Sa is approximately 4.1 litres. SubhanAllah.. How perfect of a role model?.. So, we generally use much much much more water for Wudhu and bathing than our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) did, Hence it is necessary to become conscious of this important aspect and refrain from wasting water during Wudhu. > Some tips to avoid wastage of water; • During Wudhu, don’t let the tap run continuously. Don’t talk while performing Wudhu, as you’ll be wasting water while conversing. Moreover, talking of worldly matters during Wudhu is inappropriate. • Don’t use water excessively, while washing the car or watering the lawn. • Mend all leaking flushes, taps, and pipes, as this can lead to a substantial saving of water. • Use the shower sensibly. While waiting for the hot water to come in the shower, gather the running cold water in a bucket. You can use it to clean the bathroom. • Do not throw garbage, chemicals, industrial waste, and other hazardous waste in any water body. • Be wise and think twice Post from Mary Cully This 3,300 feet long & up to 25 feet deep (one kilometer & 8 meter) chasm opened last August in the desert outside Hermosillo, Mexico in the state of Sonora (on the US border with Arizona). The Washington Post published an article claiming scientists said it was nothing to sweat about. Turns out the scientists are just one guy who chairs the geology department at the University of Sonora named Inocente Guadalupe Espinoza Maldonado. Professor Espinoza called the chasm a topographic accident & no cause for alarm because “These are normal manifestations of the destabilization of the ground.” He might reconsider that judgement if it went through his living room or interrupted one of his lectures. He considered it unlikely to be tectonic or seismic activity & more likely due to decades of over-pumping groundwater for agricultural irrigation which caused the surface to collapse. He claimed large-scale agriculture is going on in the area of the fault though you wouldnt know it from this picture. There isnt a shrub in sight. It well may be from excessive extraction of water & intrusion of saltwater from the nearby Gulf of California, as the good professor claims, but that sure as hell is not normal or no cause for alarm. As we can see in this video, the fault went right through a highway. He might enlighten the residents of Hermosillo by explaining if local geologists were monitoring the situation & warning public officials that faulty irrigation methods could cause topographic problems. It would also be important for him to explain how the August 6th mining spill of copper sulfate acid into the Sonora River 183 miles (294 kilometers) upstream interacts with all this. The Sonora River supplies water to nearly one million residents of Hermosillo & hundreds of thousands of people along the river & empties into the Gulf of California. Upstream the water is orange, mucky, undrinkable, & unusable in every other way. And its likely to stay that way since the mining company & Mexican government are colluding & obstructing cleanup. There is crescendoing alarm about the relationship of fracking, sinkholes, & earthquakes & the connection of all that to climate change. These are important questions that cannot be left to conspiracy theorists & other crackpots. Responsible geologists & other scientists cannot be cavalier because people are asking serious questions involving the survival of the human race. The planet will survive neoliberal depredations. The question is, will we? (Photo is screen shot from video of Sonora fault. Please view the brief video to see how scary the damn thing is.) https://youtube/watch?v=yIoMEfGDeV8#t=15 Meraj
