Doorsteps Philip L. Levin Statue in gray, sixteen stones Once they led to family home Porch and rockers, shady trees A view upon the calming sea Carved woodwork, intricate tiles Place of our love, laughter and smiles Grandma’s photos, quilts and books Years of knick knacks, hidden in nooks Generations, spot long cherished Memories more, soon to perish. Huge windows looked upon the sea That August day, the flood to be Katrina came and washed away The roof, the walls, to disarray Cups, toys, and clothes, and all we loved Needlepoint, china, all were shoved Scattered, shattered, ruin complete We’d never felt, such a defeat Once back we find, only the stairs Not rugs, nor glass, not even chair. It took six years, the stairs we kept New home attached to those doorsteps So once again, greetings we send Inviting guests, come; be our friend. Climb those steps, this annivers’ry New home, same folks, more memories.
