Doubt, shame, fatigue, anger and judgement wither the entrance to the heart, reducing the possibilities of clarity and mercy. Weakened by fear, we cling to the known, to our fundamental suffering. We fall back on familiar hells. We distill suffering from pain. We hide in our wounds. These moments when the heart is closed, obscured by grief, is for many the bane of relationship. But for some, for those willing to go beyond their pain to discover life itself, the difficulty in relationship is not a curse, but a blessing. It is an opportunity to see other as self and that neither is quite as real or definable as the mind insists. We discover that exploring what closes the heart opens it, and experience...that true love and prayer are learned in moments when prayer has become impossible and the heart has turned to stone. Some exclaim that it is the misunderstandings, the emotional ups and downs, the ever-changing boundaries on our personal maps, the balance of care for another with self-interest, the painful remnants of previous unsuccessful interactions that are the killers of relationship. And they cultivate distrust and a depressed sense of helplessness. But for the committed heart that wishes to go beyond the mind of suffering, this is the perfect opportunity to let go mindfully of the unheartful and personally painful. It is a ripe field of investigation, a possibility of life anew. from Embracing the Beloved by Stephen and Ondrea Levine
