Dr. Carl Sagan said, You have to know the past to understand the present. Sometimes we miss out on that simple thing called the past and in fact many dont even give it any attention or feel like it is important enough to know about. But in a city as old as Bay St. Louis and that is filled with such rich history as we have here, it can be seen daily....if you know where to look. Cedar Rest Cemetery which is bounded by Second, Easterbrook, and Toulme Streets is a good starting point to find the names of our citys founding fathers, and those of both famous and infamous characters that once walked the streets of Bay St. Louis. Each year since 1993, the Hancock County Historical Society gives its Annual Cemetery Tour on Halloween night. Originating to discourage vandalism by mischievous ghosts and goblins, the annual event has grown into a much anticipated and appreciated attraction which helps preserve and teach the history of the area. History comes to life Halloween night where 12 to 15 characters are presented, usually by descendants or actors who portray them in costumes of the era. Beginning tomorrow, October 1st, and leading up to the event on Halloween, we will be presenting Tales From The Crypt giving you a look into the past and a hint of what you may see during your cemetery tour. But dont be afraid. The tour is family friendly and loved by everyone.
