Dr. Ebner this was a tribute page in The Cayman Compass a daily paper in my folks former home. I will repost it with a photo Later Dr. Herbert Ebner, an anesthesiologist who for many years wrote the “Your Good Health” column for the Caymanian Compass, died on March 22 at the age of 91 in Pembroke Pines, Florida. “He died from a long term illness that, on his good days, of which there were many, you’d hardly know existed,” said his son, Mark Ebner. Dr. Ebner was born in Montreal, Quebec, on Aug. 30, 1922, the son of Rudolph and Fanny Ebner. He graduated from Queen’s University Medical School in Kingston, Ontario, and climbed the ranks in the medical field, becoming the chief of anesthesia at The Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. During his time at the Rhode Island hospital, he published many articles on obstetric anesthesia, and was a pioneer for epidural anesthesia; having been one of the first anesthesiologists to use the treatment in the United States. After marrying his wife Mary in 1967, the couple moved to Grand Cayman in the early ‘70’s. They lived on the island for the better part of 30 years. “We bought a house in South Sound and lived there for years,” said Mrs. Ebner. “He was an educator, he was just a great guy, we were married for 47 years.”Lynn Bodden-Smatt, a close family friend, considered Dr. Ebner a second father. “I’ve known him almost my whole life, since I was a little girl. We first met when he bought a unit [at] my father’s [Villas of the Galleon] development in 1972. His daughter Kaylie [Ebner] and I became best friends in childhood,” she said. “Herb was like a second father to me. He was there for every milestone of my life, he was the MC at my wedding, he was there for my daughter’s birth, he assisted the doctor when my daughter was very ill and had to be flown off to Miami when she was 3 weeks old,” said Ms. Bodden-Smatt. “Herb was the best, he was loved by all, he was funny, witty, and everyone who knew Herb loved him,” she added. When he was not writing health columns for the local newspaper, or giving free medical advice to anyone who needed it, Dr. Ebner was immersed in volunteer work and service. “He is known for his quick wit, his warm disposition, and his helping hand for everyone in need. A really extraordinary man, his generosity is exemplified by his deeds: volunteering at Her Majesty’s Prison and the hospital, and rescuing stray animals,” said his son. As well as saving abandoned pets, Dr. Ebner spent his free time reading and travelling the world. “He was a great supporter of the Cayman Islands Humane Society and we adopted two dogs from there and Stella was his love,” said Mrs. Ebner. Among his many interests was law. At the ripe age of 72, he attended the Cayman Islands Law School from Oct. 1994 to June 1995 and earned himself a certificate in criminal law. “He was very interested in law, and he got a certificate. The whole law school loved him, he attended lectures at 72 years old,” said, Ms. Bodden-Smatt, who attended law school with Dr. Ebner. Another attendee at the law school at the same time, Cayman Islands Deputy Governor Franz Manderson remembers Dr. Ebner fondly. “Dr. Ebner and I attend the Cayman Islands Law School together,” Mr. Manderson said. “Dr. Ebner’s infectious personality and quick wit made him very popular with students. He was a source of inspiration to me and he often encouraged me to ‘aspire to great things.’” He added, “I was saddened to read of his passing and wish to offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.” Dr. Ebner held medical licenses with the State of Rhode Island, the Medical Council of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the American Board of Anesthesiology. At the Women and Infants Hospital, his appointments included chief of the department of anesthesiology; chief-emeritus of the department of anesthesiology; member of the board of trustees, and president of medical staff. His academic appointments included assistant clinical professor at the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, and assistant clinical professor in the departments of obstetrics, gynecology and anesthesiology, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. He was also a member of various medical societies including: The Providence Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiology, Rhode Island Medical Society, New England Society of Anesthetists, International Anesthesia Research Society, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, Boston Obstetrical Society, New England Pediatric Society, the Collier County Medical Society Naples,FLA, and the Cayman Islands Medical Society. Memorial A memorial tribute was held on March 26 in Dr. Ebner’s honor at his residence in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Although Dr. Ebner passed away in the United States, his family says he always considered the Cayman Islands home, and he will return to Grand Cayman where his remains will be scattered at sea. Dr. Ebner is survived by his wife Mary Ryan Ebner, and children Heidi Ebner Just of Steilacoom, Washington; Kaylie Calvi of Mobile, Alabama; and Mark Ebner of Los Angeles, California.
