Dr Jalal flown to AIIMS for treatment Bullet has completely damaged his left eye: Doctors Srinagar, July 21: Eminent cardiologist and former Director SKIMS, Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-din, who was critically wounded in an attack by unidentified gunmen on Thursday, was flown in an Air Ambulance to New Delhi Sunday for “specialized treatment.” Jalal who lost left eye in the attack is stated to be stable. “This afternoon, he was flown to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi for treatment,” Dr Farooq Ahmad Jan, HOD Hospital Administration and in-charge Medical Superintendent SKIMS told Greater Kashmir. Jan said condition of Dr Jalal is “stable” but he was shifted to New Delhi for “ophthalmic care of right eye”. But sources disclosed that the family was persistently demanding treatment of Jalal outside the state due to security considerations after the incident. “The government gave into the demand after the family took up the matter at the highest level,” they said. On Thursday afternoon, unidentified gunmen shot at Jalal when he was walking in a lane outside his ancestral house at Pampore. Jalal’s two bodyguards Tariq Ahmad Bhat and Parvez Ahmad Wani died on the spot while he was shifted to SKIMS where Dr Abrar Wani and Dr Altaf Ramzan operated upon him. Top officials in SKIMS said that after 3-hour intense surgery, the bullet which was stuck in the brain of Dr Jalal was retrieved. “The bullet has completely damaged the left eye of Dr Jalal,” they said, adding that medicos apprehend that he might have lost vision in the right eye too due to “optic nerve injury”. “The optic nerve serves as the video cable that connects the eyes to the human brain,” they said. The attack on Jalal evoked condemnations from across the board in the Valley. While Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani termed it as “inhumane and unacceptable” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed it an act of cowardice. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police today said the attack was carried out by militants and there seems no other angle behind the incident as of now. “The preliminary investigations reveal that the attack was executed by militants,” Superintendent of Police Awantipora, Abdul Waheed Shah said. “The investigation in the case is going on in the right direction,” he said.
