Dr Jitendra arriving Srinagar today to review relief work Posted on 11/09/2014 by Dailyexcelsior Excelsior Correspondent NEW DELHI, Sept 10 : Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Space and Atomic Energy will be reaching Srinagar tomorrow morning for an on-the-spot assessment of flood relief and rescue measures. He is also scheduled to visit the various shelter homes set up by Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Dr Jitendra Singh also informed that the Prime Minister had issued orders that over five hundred Engineering students who had moved from Srinagar to Leh in panic, should be flown out tomorrow free of cost from Leh to different destinations. Meanwhile, reassuring the relatives, kith and kin of the persons stranded in flood hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Jitendra Singh said that there is no need to panic and while so far over 80,000 people have been rescued by the Armed forces and NDRF, the remaining are also in the process of being shifted out from the places where they are held up and there is no report so far of any physical harm to anybody. He made this appeal in response to hundreds of phone calls and SMS messages being received from across the country for the last three days from the relatives of stranded persons. Lauding the role of Army, air-force and para-military forces including BSF, Dr Jitendra Singh said that the Indian Air-force and Army alone have so far pressed into service around 100 air-crafts and helicopters. In addition, 329 columns of army personnel are already deployed in the State who are performing an exemplary task under most inhospitable conditions which only goes on to prove the point that the Indian army and para-military forces are not only capable of fighting the enemy on the borders but also equally capable of fighting the ravages of natural calamity like the one being witnessed in Jammu & Kashmir, he observed. Dr Jitendra Singh went on to say “as an elected representative from Jammu & Kashmir, I wish to place on record that the entire population to Jammu & Kashmir regardless of political, religious or regional affiliations, will continue to remain indebted to Indian defence forces for a long time to come”. He said, arrangements were being made for more relief material particularly food packets and drinking water. Boats including “inflatable” boats are also being provided in increasing numbers, he added. He said, the major hassle has been on account of break-down of communication and telephone links which, he said, was in the process of being restored. He also informed that several medical teams of doctors were air-lifted from Delhi to Srinagar yesterday which included several Kashmir origin doctors based in Delhi who have been advised to join the medical teams because of their familiarity with the topography and local conditions of the State.
