Dr. Murphy here: If you have seen me lately you may have a few - TopicsExpress

Dr. Murphy here: If you have seen me lately you may have a few questions about me. 1) “Have you lost weight?” Yes. 2) “Are you trying to?” Yes (no I’m not ill!) 3) “Why?” I was leading a very unhealthy lifestyle, and preaching health to my patients but not practicing what I preached. My blood pressure was rising, and I didn’t feel well. It is difficult to tell a patient with diabetes or high blood pressure that they need to lose weight and exercise more to save their vision when the doctor sitting in front of them is a poster boy for the Couch Potato Association of America. 4) “How much have you lost?” So far, 38 pounds since May 6 when I decided to get serious. 5) “Has it helped your blood pressure?” Big time. My systolic is down 30 points and my diastolic is down 20 points. 6) “Do you have a goal?” Actually, I have a couple of goals. The interim goal is another 44 pounds before Christmas. My final goal is to be where I was in High School. That will mean another 70 pounds, but that 70 will be more difficult than the first 82 7) “How are you doing it?” A combination of using the amazing smart-phone apps now available to help me count calories and log exercise, and actually DOING the exercise. I swim laps (3/4 to 1.5 miles a day so far) and ride bikes. (Sunday went on a 21 mile ride and then swam 3/4 mile.) Before, I steadfastly refused to keep a log and look up calories in a book. It was just too much of a pain to mess with. Smart phone apps remove the obstacle to tracking calories in and calories out and make it a breeze. Do you want to join me? I’m losing a person, but you don’t need to try and match me. If you’re a patient here send me a message on the patient portal at https://revolutionphr and we can swap stories privately. (If you don’t have portal credentials yet, or if you forgot them, call us and get signed up)
