Dr Noel Chia says we dont really have a complete picture of what universal access to transport and freedom of movement means. *** Based on the reports and Voices letters in TODAY about transport issues during the past week, what is lacking is our awareness of universal access. The goal of universal access is to enable everyone — young or old, student or worker, employed or unemployed, able or disabled, motorist or even wheelchair user — to travel comfortably on the public roads and transport systems. It aims to achieve transportation equity, improve community liveability and maximise the percentage of the population who can travel independently, thus providing our society a cost-effective mass transit system and making it more affordable for the remainder with special needs.
