Dreams Come True, the wonderful wish-granting charity who provide special days out, holidays or gifts - whatever they wish for - to children and young people with life limiting, life threatening and terminal conditions, have granted me a wish. We’ve been through a few ideas now but I was asking to go and see War Horse at The National Theatre, possibly go backstage and to have a day up in London. Dreams Come True have worked really hard to organise my wish, only to find that The National Theatre is not wheelchair friendly - unless you can transfer and sit in a small, bog standard, unsupportive in-house wheelchair, which I can’t. Originally we thought I couldn’t go backstage unless I could transfer, but no; there is no electric-wheelchair access to the theatre AT ALL. So my wish cannot be granted. How, in this day and age, can a business - let alone one as big and highly visited as The National Theatre - get away with discriminating against disabled people who can’t sit in a manual, unsupportive wheelchair? It’s wrong. So wrong. So I won’t get my wish unless War Horse does a tour and comes to a wheelchair accessible theatre in the East or South East of England.
