Drive-By Shooting Targets Men on George St. Porch SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — Three young men avoided any injury when they were targeted in a drive-by shooting in Springfield early Thursday. Springfield Police say that officers were dispatched around 12:40 a.m., when their ShotSpotter system indicated that shots had been fired on Maple St. Once they arrived on the scene, police were told that gun shots were fired into a home at 11 George St. One of the residents told police that her two sons and their friend were sitting on the front porch of that home, when a dark black vehicle drove by. The car then came back to make another pass and stopped in front of the home. A suspect then got out of the rear passenger door and began shooting towards those victims. While the men on the porch were not hit, the house was left with several bullet holes. Police also recovered shell casings on the scene. The men said they believe the suspects were possible gang members. The suspect who fired the shots is described as a black male wearing a white t-shirt. Police believe the car was a black Saturn or Nissan sedan. They are working on locating that vehicle. Springfield Police do not believe the incident was related to another shooting on Phoenix St. less than an hour earlier. They found shell casings from 40-caliber and 9 millimeter bullets in front of 31 Phoenix St. just before midnight. A bystander told police that there were four shots fired before the vehicle sped away. They were not able to give a description of that vehicle. Police believe subjects on bicycles may have also been involved. The shell casings were recovered on the scene, but police said there were no victims and no property damage as a result.
