Drunken driving checkpoint to be conducted Sunday in Medina Township MEDINA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Authorities will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday on Ohio 18 east of River Styx Road in Medina Township. The Medina County OVI Task Force said in a press release that it would operate the checkpoint, which is intended to deter and intercept impaired drivers, along with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. An increased number of police cruisers will also patrol the area around the checkpoint, the task force said. At a checkpoint, police pull over vehicles and ask questions to determine whether the operator is driving while impaired. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the checkpoints, which are designed to be non-discriminatory, are constitutional, according to the Ohio State Bar Association. The task force was recently awarded more than $125,000 in federal funds to conduct drunken driving checkpoints throughout the next year. The money will be used to pay for all costs associated with the checkpoints, including overtime pay for officers. The task force is a partnership between police departments in Brunswick, Brunswick Hills Township, Hinckley Township, Lodi, Medina, Medina Township, Montville Township, Seville, Spencer and Wadsworth; the Medina County Sheriff’s Office; and the State Highway Patrol.
