Dunfanaghy Ladies Branch The Ladies’ Monthly Medal, held on Tuesday 8th July, was won by Joan Cowan with a nett score of 65. Olivia Moore was second (68 nett). Siobhan Bogues and Olivia Moore had 2s at the 7th and 9th respectively. The CSS was 69. Many thanks to the members who attended a very informative Rules Night last Friday, 11th July. This was given by Tracy Spence of Letterkenny Golf Club and the ILGU. Tracy gave a very user friendly overview of the etiquette expected from golfers, explained the reasoning behind some of the rules and clarified uncertainties. After a very useful and informative true/false quiz, Tracy answered questions and queries from members. We thank her for taking the time to share her knowledge and expertise with us in such a relaxed and entertaining way. The timesheet for the Centenary Cup to be held next Saturday, 19th July and sponsored by Barbara Eakin is now available in the shop. Ladies are asked to note that this is a stroke competition. Ladies are also asked to keep an eye out in the locker room for information about Lady Captain’s Day on the 9th August. Please indicate your intention to play by signing the sheet. Last Tuesday was the Qualifying competition for the Lady Captain’s Shootout. This was followed by the Shootout itself when the best 8 scores and best two gross scores went out again in a knockout competition with one player dropping out at each hole leaving two players on the last hole. The qualifiers were : Natalie Cummings, Maggie Foy, Karen McCormack, Deborah Moore, Rose Gavigan, Moira Irwin, Sandra McGinley, Janice Doherty, Mabel Gillespie and Margaret Witherow What a cracker of a competition it turned out to be and it was good to see a big number of spectators out watching the match unfold. There was a playoff in the first hole with sudden death for one of the players then on to the third hole. (Holes 1,3,12,13,14,15,16,17,18 were played with the handicap adjusted accordingly) Just one mistake or one bad lie was enough to put a competitor out of a hole and so it went on. The tension was building beautifully and even the golfers knocked out of the competition came back to see the final outcome. Hole 14 was another playoff hole when Barbara Eakin’s current team partners Sandra and Janice went head to head against each another. Janice and Sandra each had a chip to see who would stay in the match. Competition referee James Brogan gave them an ‘easy chip’ (easy for James) with the closer to the pin staying in and Janice just managed to beat Sandra by inches to hold her place. Ooh’s and aah’s from the crowd. On to 15, Maggie Foy was playing brilliant golf but having only 4 shots needed to par and birdie her way home to keep her place. But not to be as a lip out putt on 15 ended her challenge. Still 4 left Karen, Moira, Janice and Margaret heading up 16 but when Karen caught the drain with her drive, that saw the end of her challenge also. On to 17 great drive from Margaret, just short of the green, great drive from Janice but big at the back of the green but Moira caught the rough in front of the tee box to a lot of ooh’s and aah’s from the watching crowd. Tough rough that stuff and so ended the challenge from Moira. On to 18. The final Hole. Margaret Witherow v’s Janice Doherty. This was a corker. Great drive from Margaret, but pulled drive from Janice. Emm bad stuff, much debate, penalty drop and Janice on her way again. Second shot from Margaret pushed – OB – penalty drop. The excitement was brilliant both players just short of the green. Chip on two putts each – Hole halved. Referee James then gave them a 20 foot putt to decide the winner. Margaret first, brilliant putt into 10 inches. Pressure on, Janice putt rolled up and on and on into 6 inches. It was really an amazing night and a first important win for Janice. Well done to all who qualified, you were all winners on the day and thanks for such an entertaining night’s golf.
