Dunwoody’s city leadership has re-issued the Request for Bid on - TopicsExpress

Dunwoody’s city leadership has re-issued the Request for Bid on the re-location of the Brook Run Dog Park. The first bid (last year) FAR exceeded the City budget. Furthermore, the City was provided considerable evidence that the new location violated virtually every “best practice” regarding the location and building of dog parks. For example: • Do not use sodded lawns as dogs will kill the grass • Do not locate near other park activity areas (Skate park, Children’s Park) • Do not locate near high traffic roads or multi-use trails This list goes on and on. Last year the City Council asked the Brook Run Dog Park Association (BRDPA) to come up with a plan that addressed the City’s issues and allowed the park to stay in its current location. That plan was submitted to City representatives. No comment has ever been made regarding its legitimacy or practicality. The new Request for Bid asks the bidders to re-use fencing from the current park instead of new fencing, stating that the city will take down and transport this to the new site. While this may save some contract dollars, it still will cost taxpayers to have this done using City workers… just another way to HIDE the total expenditures! [Note: Last year the city said that re-using chain link fencing was not a good idea.] Part of the design for the dog park relocation includes surrounding groups of trees with fencing (because the city insists that dogs can kill trees). They have reduced the height requirement of the fencing around the trees inside the park from 6 ft. to 4 ft. Dogs will jump a 4 ft. fence at the first sight of a squirrel running up a tree. This could present a risk of injury to our dogs. BRDPA has repeatedly requested the Citys help in order to get a dollar figure estimate for the re-design of the current park location but to absolutely NO AVAIL. Re-design of the current park to address specific issues would cost the City and thus all Dunwoody taxpayers considerably less money as BRDPA has a tremendous volunteer network that would provide most of the labor AT NO COST. Only certain professional needs -- such as some fencing and grading -- would be required for the project. Why spend an exorbitant amount of money to move something that is harming no one and can be re-designed to address ANY environmental or noise problems WITHOUT incurring so many new problems in moving it to a new location??? The bottom-line is WHEN are our City representatives going to wake up, STOP needless expenditures of our tax monies, and LISTEN to the people that voted them into office?
