During the 70s behavioral scientists conducted a test that seems rather inconceivable now. One group of rats were subjected to electrical shocks but, by following a certain procedure, learned how to turn off their pain. The other group was subjected to arbitrary shocks that continued despite anything the rats did in response. After a number of those shock treatments, the rats were dumped into tubs of water. The ones who had received arbitrary shocks just sank to the bottom with little struggle. The ones who had experienced a measure of destiny control continued to swim for hours. The takeaway?
