Dzulo anakana, lero akuvomera. Kodi should we trust our Police and Government? The Police finally confirm blocking former Budget Director in the Ministry of Finance, Paul Mphwiyo, from flying out of the country yesterday. Mphwiyo, whose shooting in September last year, triggered revelations of massive plundering of public funds at Capital hill, was about to board a plane bound for South Africa at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe. National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said their move to bar Mphwiyo was a response to an order from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), where Mphwiyo now works. She did not give reasons for stopping him from leaving the country adding the OPC was in a better position to explain. Efforts to speak to the OPC proved futile. Mphwiyo is seen as crucial to the on-going investigations on the looting of billions of tax payers’ money at the seat of government in Lilongwe. His barring from leaving the country also comes after murmurs of disapproval from the public, opposition politicians and civic society leaders at the omission of names of those involved in the looting from the forensic auditor’s report released last week.
