EAD ABOUT HEALTH “Health is not everything, but without health, everything is nothing”, Realize how important the health is, on December 20th 2014, we delivered our weekly Educational Activity Day (EAD) concerning to health in relation to poverty and nutritional issues leaded by Mintra, Ariane, Christen, and me (Linda). Arriving at café recontre in AFY around 9.05, and started to set up for EAD. We divided the topic into some sub topics that were: (1) how poverty can lead to health issues? (2) Mini group sharing of 14 social determinants of health, (3)What has either Canada or Indonesia’s government implemented to overcome the food insecurity issues, (4) what is Basal Metabolic Rate and Diet, and the last (5) what about Canadian and Indonesia Food Guide. Firstly, we began the EAD by the circle check with some optional questions, that were : (1) What is the new/favorite meal since you’ve been in Canada? (2) What is nutrition? (3) Some things that you want to do before leaving Canada and (4) Some things you want to do when you firstly come in Indonesia. Everyone declared their response for those questions which was awesome. I began to breakdown the sub topic by understanding what health is. According to WHO, health is a state of is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO). And then we tried to understand about poverty in its role to trigger health issues including nutritional issues as well. Disability to gain enough income leads to no capability to buy proper and nutritious food which can trigger nutritional issues such kwashiorkor, marasmus, and many others. We watched a movie about food insecurity, how someone easily gain food by buying fast food anytime they want, while on the other hand, some of them have to try harder to gain some food, even they took the compost, and the garbage in which those are all waste, but they took it and gave it for their family. It was so terrible and sad moments, but then they just keep grateful for all of those things. How we have to share and eat considerably. It’s all about food security which point out that it is not only about satisfy your hunger, but also how to provide nutritious and proper food for everyone. The same idea we experienced regarding to food insecurity when there was no apples available in the Superstore in White horse, Yukon for a couple days. Besides that, some issues triggering health problem such as limited health service center, lack of health care education, unsanitary recycling of food, and addiction to fast food were also mentioned during our discussion. Continuing our activity by making some interactive discussion about 14 social determinants of health leaded by Ariane and Christen which are: Aboriginal status Race Gender Employment and working conditions Disability Social exclusion Housing Food insecurity Early life Social safety net Income and income distribution Health services Education Unemployment and job security We divided into 2 groups consisting of two people and 2 topics as well, and they had 5 minutes to case building including proposing the idea to overcome those issues, before presenting them one by one. Everyone sharing their bright ideas related to the topic they picked up as well. Mintra came up with the ideas about BMR and diet. BMR is abbreviation for basal metabolic rate in which is the rate of energy expenditure by humans and other birds and mammals (endotherms) at rest, and is often reported in units of kJ per hour per kg body mass. Just like a cell phone, how long it stands without using it and just let it down. Basically the way to calculate your BMR is by following some patterns. One of them is: • BMR for Man = 88,362 + (13,397 x Weight (kg)) + (4,799 x Height (cm)) - (5,677 x Age (years)) • BMR for woman = 447,593 + (9,247 x Weight (kg)) + (3,098 x Height (cm)) - (4,33 x Age (years)) And then, we talked a bit about diet, diet is not only about reducing your body weight but also how to increase your body weight, including exercise and eat often. And also some idea about boosting your BMR by doing lift weighting and cardio. To conclude, the idea of the tag line “you are what you eat” is kind of good ways to understand how important the nutrition to support our health and somehow we need to concern about food security.
