EBOLA Additional Updates Government of Liberia through International Partners intensifies the fight against the deadly Ebola epidemic in Liberia. EBOLA GOOD NEWS ISOLATION AND TREATMENT CENTERS: MSF currently runs the Ebola Treatment Unit at ELWA. They have 160 beds and will go up to 400 beds. MSF also runs the ETU in Foya. MSF is currently training two other NGOs to run centers in Bong and Nimba. The Center at JFK is run by Ugandan doctors under WHO. Island Clinic is being prepared to hold another 100-bed ETU and is being done by WHO. TESTING CENTERS: The labs are being run by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health BURIALS: Liberian National Red Cross, supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs EXPANSION OF ETUS IN MONROVIA: ATS, Island Clinic, Unity Conference Center Grounds etc, are all being constructed and set up by the WHO. The WHO is also training Liberian staff to take care of those centers. 1. One hundred Live births and safe deliveries at JFK Hospital since it re-opened on August 11th. 2. The EU deployed a mobile lab and a team of lab technicians to Foya to speed up testing and Ebola control in Lofa. 3. Island Clinic is being refurbished to serve as one of five new Ebola treatment centers. 4. Sixty-nine medical and para-medical volunteers are immediately available for the African Union deployment to West Africa; the first 40 come to Liberia on September 10th. 5. Four ambulances are donated to the EBOLA response: 1 each from ECOBANK and the World Lebanese Cultural Union; 2 from the Indian Community in Liberia. 6. Microsoft donates 25 laptops with epidemiological software to the African Union mission for the Ebola response. 7. U-Foundation spearheads the re-opening of C.H. Rennie Hospital in Kakata. 8. The Liberian Baptist Convention donates food and medical supplies to parishioners in 3 counties. 9. Donations in cash and kind announced this week: a) Medical supplies valued at 1.2M Swiss Francs are donated by Switzerland; b) Medical supplies valued at $220,000 are donated by companies like Chevron and Arcelor Mittal, Vedanta and others; c) Pre-packaged food & medical supplies valued at $60,000 are donated by and through Liberians in the diaspora and MATTER, a private charity in the US; d) Rufus Berry, Liberian financial expert donates medical supplies valued at $20,000; e) NOCAL donates $150,000 to the Ebola response fund; f) The UK Ahmadiya Muslims Association donates 10,000 GBP; g) LBDI donates $10,000 to Ebola Response Fund, and $1,500 to Rep. Saah Joseph for the continued functioning of his ambulance service; h) The Indian Community in Liberia and the World Lebanese Cultural Union also donate food and medical/hygiene supplies. 10. MSF provides 25,000 household care kits to protect families caring for sick patients while awaiting transport to an Ebola Treatment Center. 11. Voinjama and Quad Gboni towns in Lofa County, formerly the epicenter of the outbreak, have had no new cases of Ebola for 4 days. 12. Lawmakers and representatives from 4 counties are actively engaged in the Ebola Response. They are saving countless lives in their tireless work. Hon. Saah Joseph of Montserado County; Hon. Mariamu B. Fofana of Lofa County, Hon. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence of Grand Bassa County & Hon. Oscar Cooper of Margibi County. 13. International Federation of the Red Cross and the African Union team up to train West African media in Dakar on responsible reporting of the Ebola outbreak; similar training planned for Nairobi and Addis Ababa. 14. Ten vessels berthed at the Freeport of Liberia, bringing vital supplies to Liberia. 15. County scorecard on Ebola: a) 4: # of counties have not reported any deaths from Ebola: Sinoe, Gbarpolu, Grand Kru and Maryland. b) 2: # of EBOLA-FREE counties in Liberia: Maryland and Grand Kru. Lets work to keep them that way! c) 9: # of counties where no Health Care Worker has lost their lives to Ebola. d) 4: # of counties with fewer than 4 cumulative Ebola cases since the May: Gbarpolu, Grand Gedeh, Sinoe and River Gee.
