EDHA slashes salaries of LG PAs BENIN CITY – Edo State House of Assembly has approved the reduction of the salaries of Special Assistants to Local Governments from N75,000 to N50,000 across the state. The parliament also approved the increment in the number of Special Assistants from 10 to 15 per Local Government Council. This was contained in the resolution adopted during plenary session yesterday. Moving the motion for the reduction, the Majority Leader, Hon – Philip Shaibu said it was the duty of the Edo State House of Assembly to enact law for the administration, control and finance of local government. Hon. Philip Shaibu further said that the Edo State Local Government Law 2000 as amended empowers the State Assembly to approve by resolution, the appointment of Special Advisers and Special Assistants from time to time. According to the Majority Leader, the stipulated number of Special Assistants in the Local Government Council was presently 10 per local government council with the remuneration of N75,000 each. The Majority Leader noted that the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) was empowered to determine and fix the remuneration of Local Government Officers except for the office of the Special Assistants. “Election into the Local Government Councils in Edo State was held and the councils inaugurated in April, 2013, it is imperative that all functionaries of the council be put in place in accordance with the local government law 2000 as amended for effective administration,” the Majority Leader added. The House however adopted the resolution that number of Special Assistants to each of the local government councils be increased from 10 to 15 and their monthly salaries fixed at N50,000 after tax deduction. The speaker, Rt. Hon. Uyi Igbe therefore directed that the copies of the resolution be forwarded to the chairman of the 17 local government council areas and the governor for immediate action.
