EDSG To Provide Affordable Houses For Edo People - Hon Francis Evbuomwan By Rose Oribhabor This was made known by the Honourable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Architect Francis Evbuomwan during an exclusive interview with the SUNDAY OBSERVER. According to Hon Evbuomwan, who is the pioneer Commissioner in the Ministry, the new Ministry was set up to reorder the urban development sector, develop some estates in the three senatorial districts of the state as well as encourage private sector investment in the housing sub-sector. Continuing, the Commissioner said “whether you are a private or government worker, when we start, you will have access to those houses on owner occupier basis and pay over a period of time. Some mortgage banks have written to Edo state government wanting to partner with it in providing affordable houses for the people, stating that government will in a big way reshape the urban setting and redesign our urban space for more commodious living”. Hon Evbuomwan said that the Ministry has also facilitated the establishment of Shoprite in Benin city, stating that the company has been given a site for their operation and would soon start work . “We are also looking at several other options, that is, real estate development options that will improve the urban environment in the state. Recently, we published adverts inviting investors who are interested in developing private housing estates in Benin city to come forward and government is assisting with land and infrastructures”, the Commissioner said. On what he has to say about the unfolding drama in Taraba state, Commissioner Evbuomwan said “all I can say is that in Edo state, what we always insist on is that the rule of law must prevail. The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is quite clear on what to do when a governor is incapacitated, so we call for maturity, for people to obey the laws of the land and handle the issue the way it is prescribed in our constitution”.
