EGG CUP OF THE DAY FOR 12/7/14 - This cup produces several questions. First, what is the scene? At first I thought it was a lady sitting at a table with a white table cloth. Further investigation and enlargement reveals that the white are is simply the ladys skirt, She is holding something in her hands that is totally undecipherable. The gentleman next to her appears to be kneeling on one knee. This could be a proposal, I suppose, or just a very gallant gentleman greeting the lady. The decoration of the cup appears to be mocking what is known as Flow-blue, a situation in which the cobalt glaze has run in the kiln, causing a slightly blurred picture. I assume this is on purpose in this example. The mark is also a bit confusing. It contains two words, Bursalem and Doulton. Bursalem is one of the towns that make up the area in England collectively called Stoke=on-Trent. The area is also referred to as The Potteries, due to the vast number of factories producing pottery during the past two or three centuries. During the late 19th C., the number of bottle kilns operating in the area filled the horizon, creating a rather unhealthy atmosphere of smoke. Im not sure about the DOULTON reference. I suppose this cup could have been made before Doulton received its Royal Warrant, thus giving the company the right to be called ROYAL DOULTON. Further investigation is required. See descriptions of the photos.
