EGYPT The earliest glass vessels which can be dated accurately are those discovered in the tombs of Ancient Egypt. A small glass jar found in an Egyptian tomb bears the name of King Thothmess III, who live from about 1.504 / 1.450 BC. Glassmaking, however, must have started considerably earlier than this to have produced such elegant articles by the XVth century BC. Current scientific opinion believes that the manufacture of glass originated in Western Asia in the region of Mesopotamia some time before 2.000 BC, although only fragments dating from this period have been discovered. This seems a reasonable supposition, since the Egyptian pieces referred to above exhibit a considerable mastery of the art which must have taken some considerable time to achieve.
