ELECTION – God’s leading of us for a specific purpose: Our gracious God chooses an individual or a group of people for a specific purpose or destiny: “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” [Rom. 8:28] Four thousand years ago, God chose a tribal chieftain named Abram and his people, and God brought them out of the land of Ür of the Chaldeans in Mesopotamia to re-settle in the land of Canaan. In response to Abram’s willing faith and submission to God’s command, God renamed him Abraham, “father of many”, and made a covenant to give him and his descendants this promised land forever. When God took his chosen people out of bondage from Egypt, he told them, “You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” [Ex. 19:6] The Lord chose his people, the Israelites, because he loved them: “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth.” [Amos 3:2] By his divine power, Jesus “called us by his own glory and goodness” [2Pet. 1:3] to give us life and godliness through our knowledge of him. We are God’s elect who have been chosen “through the sanctifying work of the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood.” [1Pet. 1:2] With Gods Spirit working within us, God chooses us in Christ “to be holy and blameless in his sight….to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” [Eph. 1:4,5]
